Zone Three: The Kitchen Counter

A paper calendar hung at eye level above the counter, read each morning while the kettle heats and updated each evening, for every appointment in the house.

The kitchen is where most households plan the day without noticing it. That makes the counter the right place for the house's main record, the equivalent of the operator's wall board at the desk.

Hang a large paper calendar at eye level, with a pen tied to it by a string so the pen never wanders. Write every appointment, birthday, bill and visit on it, in one colour for you and another for anyone you share the house with. Read it each morning, and add to it each evening before the hallway walk. A phone calendar is fine as a backup, but paper on the wall has one advantage: it is seen without being opened.

Keep any medicine schedule on a separate small chart beside the calendar, written with your doctor or pharmacist, never improvised. Many readers say the calendar quietly changes how a week feels. Days stop blurring into one another when each square holds something you can point at, and the head no longer has to rehearse dates at three in the morning.
