Zone Four: The Bedside

A pocket notebook and a pencil within reach of the pillow, for the thought that arrives at midnight and can be written down instead of rehearsed.

The last sensor on our plan is the one closest to rest. Almost everyone knows the moment: the light is off, the body is tired, and the mind produces the one task it forgot during the day.

Leave a pocket notebook with a pencil tucked in its spine next to the lamp, and the phone in another room. When a thought arrives, write it in a few words without turning on the main light, then close the notebook. The act of writing tells the mind the thought is safe on the page and will be there tomorrow. In the morning, carry the page to the kitchen calendar or the door card and cross it out in the notebook.

Some readers also use the notebook for one line before sleep: three things that happened today. It takes less than a minute and gives the day a small, clear outline. If sleep has become difficult or broken for weeks at a time, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than solving with notebooks. The bedside zone is for quiet thoughts, not for long nights.
